两性异形是指同一物种雌性和雄性个体间体型、形态、体色等方面的差异(Shine,1979;何南等,2011),反映了两性间不同的适应性。研究发现,两性异形普遍存在于鱼类(Ijiri et al., 2008;樊晓丽等,2016)、两栖类(施林强等,2011;Wang et al., 2016)、爬行类(Berry & Shine,1980;肖繁荣等,2014)、鸟类(Selander,1966;Owens & Hartley,1998)和哺乳类(Clutton-Brock et al., 1977;Ralls,1977)等动物类群中。目前龟鳖类动物的两性异形也开展了较多的研究,龟鳖类动物成体的体型存在3种两性异形模式:1)雌性大于雄性,如四眼斑水龟Sacalia quadriocellata(肖繁荣等,2014)、黄喉拟水龟Mauremys mutica(Gosnell et al., 2019);2)雄性大于雌性,如挺胸陆龟Chersina angulata(Gosnell et al., 2019);3)雌雄个体之间无显著差异,如日本拟水龟M. japonica(Gosnell et al., 2009)。因此龟鳖类动物体型大小的两性异形无统一模式(Cox et al., 2007),且具有物种特异性。
咬合力体现了动物的生态适应性,直接影响动物捕获、处理及摄取食物的效率(Erickson et al., 2003;Christiansen & Wroe,2007;Huber et al., 2008)。目前国内外对咬合力开展了较多的研究工作,主要发现咬合力与动物的头部形态、食性等因素有关。头部形态能反映咬合力:通常头部越大个体的咬合力越大(Herrel et al., 2002;Herrel et al., 2005a, 2005b;Sustaita et al., 2014)。此外,肉食性动物的咬合力大于植食性、杂食性动物(Herrel et al., 2002),且咬合力大的动物取食效率也较高(Herrel et al., 2001;Verwaijen & Herrel,2002;der Meij & Bout,2006)。然而,这方面的研究主要集中于同一动物类群的种间比较(Herrel et al., 2002;霍娟等,2016;谭梁静等,2017)、同一物种不同发育阶段的比较(Erickson et al., 2003;Herrel & O'Reilly,2006;Pfaller et al., 2010;Marshall et al., 2012)。目前同一物种雌性和雄性个体间的咬合力是否存在性二型的研究相对较少,且结论不一(霍娟等,2016;Herrel et al., 2018)。因此,动物的咬合力性二型及其与形态的关系仍需进一步研究。
红耳龟Trachemys scripta elegans又名巴西龟,原产于美国密西西比河至墨西哥湾周围地区(Gibbons,1990);20世纪80年代,该物种经香港入侵我国内陆地区,野外分布区涉及22个省市(史海涛等,2009)。雌性红耳龟成体的体型显著大于雄性(Gibbons & Lovich,1990),体色(汪继超等,2013)、听力敏感性(Wang et al., 2019)也存在两性异形。红耳龟为杂食性动物,食域范围广泛,雌雄之间对动、植物性食物的取食频次和比重均无显著差异(Wang et al., 2013)。研究发现,红耳龟咬合力发育存在可塑性,成体咬合力显著大于幼体(Herrel & O'Reilly,2006)。目前红耳龟成体咬合力是否存在两性异形及其与形态的关系尚不清楚。本研究采用力值传感器量化了红耳龟的咬合力,分析了咬合力可能的性别差异及其与体型大小两性异形的关系,以期为理解该物种的生态适应性提供参考。
1 材料与方法 1.1 实验材料2015年8—10月在海南省文昌岸兴龟类养殖专业合作社购买红耳龟成体,饲养于海南师范大学生态园龟鳖生态养殖池内(200 cm×150 cm×120 cm),水深高过红耳龟的背甲约5 cm,每隔3 d饲喂龟粮(海豚水族有限公司)1次,当日取出剩余食物,清洗养殖箱并换水。驯化约1周后,随机选取30只健康个体进行实验。
1.2 咬合力测定咬合力采用咬合力测量仪器(南京神源生智能科技有限公司)测定。该设备主要包括咬合力传感器(S2-500NHL-001,0~500 N/0.001 N)、模拟数据采集卡(NBIT-DUS-2404A)和信号采集软件(DSU2404A)三部分,其工作原理是模拟数据采集卡将作用在传感器上的力值信号转换成电信号,然后通过信号采集软件将力值的变化以波形图的形式显示出来。测量时,一手托住红耳龟腹部,另一只手轻放在红耳龟背甲上,将其头部靠近咬合力传感器的探头,等待红耳龟主动咬合。每只红耳龟重复测量7次,去掉7次数据的最大值和最小值,剩余的5次数据的平均值作为每只红耳龟的咬合力。
1.3 形态特征测量采用电子秤(莫林贸易有限公司;30 kg/1 g)称量体质量。采用数显游标卡尺(香港五羊工具有限公司;0~300 mm/0.01 mm)测量背甲长(颈盾前缘至臀盾后缘最大直线长度)、头长(吻端至上、下颌关节后缘的直线距离)、头宽(头左、右两侧间最大距离)和头高(头上、下两侧间最大距离)。并计算头部大小=(3.141 5×头长×头宽×头高)/6(Macías-Ordóñez & Draud,2005)。
1.4 数据分析数据均经过正态分布(Kolmogorov-Smirnov test)和方差齐性检验(Levene test)。采用独立样本t检验比较了背甲长在雌性和雄性个体间的差异显著性。采用线性回归分析咬合力和形态指标间的关系。以背甲长为协变量,采用协方差分析(ANCOVA)比较雌性和雄性个体间咬合力、头长、头宽等指标的差异性。数据均以x±SD表示,采用SPSS 19.0分析,P < 0.05为差异有统计学意义,P < 0.01为差异有高度统计学意义(双尾检验)。
2 结果 2.1 红耳龟的咬合力雌性红耳龟(n=16)的咬合力(71.92 N±15.59 N)显著大于雄性(n=14)的(55.24 N±10.09 N)(P=0.047)(图 1)。
2.2 红耳龟的形态指标雌性红耳龟的体质量(F=10.360,P=0.003)、头部大小(F=6.850,P=0.014)、背甲长(t=2.951,P=0.008)、头宽(F=10.614,P=0.003)均显著大于雄性,而头长、头高在雌性和雄性个体间的差异无统计学意义(P>0.05)(表 1)。

红耳龟的咬合力与体质量(R2=0.437,F1,28=21.693,P=0.002)、头部大小(R2=0.444,F1,28=22.319,P < 0.001)、背甲长(R2=0.396,F1,28=18.356,P=0.001)、头长(R2=0.312,F1,28=12.691,P=0.002)、头宽(R2=0.515,F1,28=29.724,P=0.001)、头高(R2=0.380,F1,28=17.164,P=0.001)均呈显著的线性关系(表 2)。

本研究测定了30只红耳龟成体的咬合力,其大小为63.96 N±15.27 N。Herrel等(2002)报道了红耳龟的咬合力为14.59 N±18.76 N,这小于本研究的测定结果。分析发现,Herrel等(2002)测定的红耳龟个体相对较小,背甲长仅为88.77 mm±53.26 mm,而本研究中红耳龟的背甲长为218.40 mm±17.24 mm。此外Herrel和O'Reilly(2006)测定了包括幼体和成体在内的32只红耳龟的咬合力,范围为1.02~104.14 N,且成体咬合力大于幼体。本研究测定的咬合力结果与Herrel和O'Reilly(2006)测定的红耳龟成体的咬合力结果相似。因此,红耳龟咬合力受体型大小的影响。
本研究发现,雌性红耳龟成体的咬合力显著大于雄性,表明该物种的咬合力存在性二型。此外红耳龟的咬合力与头部形态显著相关,且雌性个体的头部大小、头宽均显著大于雄性。因此,头宽的性别分化引起了该物种咬合力的两性异形。这与Herrel等(2018)对菱斑龟Malaclemys terrapin咬合力与头部形态关系的研究结论相似。在鸟类研究中也发现,个体的头越大、喙越宽,其咬合力也越大(Herrel et al., 2005a, 2005b;Sustaita & Rubega,2014)。头部空间增大可以为牵引肌提供更大的附着面,从而引起咬合力的增大( der Meij & Bout,2004;Herrel et al., 2005a)。
目前性选择压力、生育力选择压力和生态位分离假说可解释动物两性异形的形成(Shine,1989;Olsson et al., 2002;廖灏泓等,2013)。本研究发现,雌性红耳龟体型显著大于雄性。生育力选择压力假说认为,雌性体型的增大有利于增加繁殖输出(Olsson et al., 2002;Kupfer,2009;Luo et al., 2012),这也导致雌性个体需要摄取更多的食物以满足能量需求。咬合力与动物处理食物的时间有关,咬合力大的个体取食效率提高(Herrel et al., 2001;Verwaijen & Herrel,2002;der Meij & Bout,2006)。因此,雌性红耳龟采用增大咬合力的策略,提高自身的取食效率,以满足大体型及繁殖的能量需求,从而提高自身的适合度。此外,繁殖期的雌性红耳龟需要在陆地上完成巢址选择、筑巢、产卵等活动,更大的咬合力可能有助于应对更为复杂的陆地环境。
生态位分离假说认为,动物通过两性异形以适应不同的生态位(Slatkin,1984;Shine,1989),从而降低了捕食压力(Aguirre et al., 2002;Herrel et al., 2004)。Herrel等(2018)报道了菱斑龟的咬合力性二型引起了雌性和雄性个体食物结构的分化。本研究发现红耳龟的咬合力存在性二型,但已有研究发现雌雄性个体间对取食食物的频次和比重没有显著差异(Wang et al., 2013)。进一步分析发现,菱斑龟的食性专一,种内的食物竞争压力较大,食物结构的分化有利于减少食物竞争压力,而红耳龟为杂食性动物且食域范围广泛,雌雄之间食物竞争压力相对较小。因此,动物咬合力的性二型与食性分化可能与环境食物的丰富度有关。在个体发育过程中,红耳龟咬合力性二型与头部形态性别分化的时间关系值得进一步研究。
