This special column is dedicated to Professor Shou-Kuan Fu on the occasion of his 80th birthday.

Prof. Shou-Kuan Fu, born in July, 1940 in Jiangsu Province. He obtained his B.S. in Chemistry from Department of Chemistry, Fudan University in 1962, then, he graduated from graduate school of Fudan University in 1966, under the supervision of Prof. TongYin Yu, a distinguished pioneer of polymer science in China and the founder of Department of Macromolecular Science at Fudan University.

Prof. Fu has dedicated his lifetime service to Fudan University and was retired in July of 2006. He worked as a research associate in Polytechnic Institute of New York from 1983 to 1985 and as visiting scientist in Coating Research Institute, Eastern Michigan University from 1993 to 1994. During 1995–1999, he served as the Chair of Department of Macromolecular Science, Fudan University. He established and led a research team called the Emulsion Polymerization Group (EPG), committed to advancing emulsion polymerization in both fundamental study and industrial applications. The EPG group has nurtured generations of polymer scientists at home and abroad, including over 10 group alumni in academia and over 60 group alumni in industry and government labs.

Prof. Fu's research accomplishments have been published in over 120 contributions, including over 100 journal papers, 3 issued US patents, 7 Chinese patents and 4 professional books (coauthored). In recognition of his contribution to polymer science, Prof. Fu was invited to serve as an advisory board member for many important journals including Progress in Polymer Science, Journal of Macromolecular Science–Pure and Applied Chemistry, Chinese Journal of Polymer Science, Acta Polymeric Sinica (in Chinese), Polymer Bulletin (in Chinese) and Journal of Functional Polymers (in Chinese).
