联合国政府间气候变化专门委员会(IPCC)评估报告指出农业土壤固碳在减缓气候变化中充当着重要角色[1]。在2015年巴黎联合国气候变化大会上, 联合国气候变化框架公约(UNFCCC)启动了旨在固碳的“千分之四全球土壤增碳计划”[2]。该计划的依据是:如果将全球2 m深的土壤有机碳库增加千分之四可抵消全球能源碳排放。全球科学家根据各国和各地区的土壤碳储量及变化特征探讨了该计划的可行性, 结果显示表层土壤固碳潜力难以达到“千分之四全球土壤增碳计划”的设想, 而深层土壤可能在这一计划中发挥重要作用[3]。
生物质炭是指将生物质在低温厌氧的条件下裂解而产生的一种高度芳香化的化合物, 具有含碳量高、碳稳定性强、比表面积大和多孔隙结构等特点, 被认为是一项可以将大气中的CO2长期封存于土壤中的重要措施[4]。众多研究表明, 施用生物质炭具有降低土壤温室气体排放、增加有机质含量、改善土壤理化性质以及提高作物产量等作用[5-7]。目前, 关于生物质炭施用对农田土壤有机碳影响的研究主要集中于表层(0~20 cm)土壤, 而对深层土壤有机碳影响的报道较少。由于深层土壤有机碳储量巨大, 其动态对陆地生态系统碳循环的影响不容小觑[8], 因此, 开展对生物质炭施用下农田深层土壤有机碳动态的研究十分重要。本文主要针对目前农田深层土壤有机碳研究的现状, 阐述农田深层土壤有机碳的来源与稳定性, 生物质炭施用下土壤碳库动态及其对深层土壤有机碳动态的影响, 并为今后的研究提出了建议, 以期为生物质炭施用下农田土壤固碳研究提供参考。
1 深层土壤固碳的研究趋势深层土壤一般指土壤深度大于30 cm的土层。在全球0~100 cm的土层中有机碳大约储存1 500 Pg, 而深层土壤有机碳含量约占土壤总碳量的50%[9], 因此, 深层土壤有机碳的动态对气候变化的作用举足轻重。表层土壤有机碳密度较高, 且对外部环境变化响应敏感, 在过去的20多年中, 土壤表层碳库的动态受到土壤学家及生态学家的普遍关注。然而, 尽管深层土壤有机碳库的总量较大, 但一直未受到足够重视。美国国家研究理事会(NRC)在2001年提出地球关键带(earth critical zone)这一概念[10-11], 科学家们对土壤固碳研究关注的焦点开始从土壤表层转移到深层。一些研究学者已关注深层土壤有机碳的动态及稳定性。如:Koven等[12]通过模型预测表明, 在未来全球气候变暖背景下, 至2300年冻土区深层有机碳损失将达21~164 Pg; Balesdent等[8]通过荟萃分析发现土壤有机碳动态及其对气候控制或土地利用方式的响应具有很高的土壤深度依赖性; Tautges等[13]通过19年的长期定位试验揭示了表层与深层土壤有机碳对农田管理呈不同的响应, 并指出在评估土壤固碳潜力时要充分考虑深层土壤的贡献。在英国召开的世界有机质大会上, 土壤深层固碳被作为1个专题加以讨论, 并且将其称为土壤学固碳研究最后的前沿。
2 农田深层土壤有机碳的来源与稳定性一般来说, 长期耕作的农田深层土壤有机碳主要来源于可溶性有机碳(DOC)、作物根系及其分泌物、颗粒态有机碳(POC)及有机碳的难溶组分, 它们可以通过生物扰动、土壤优先流、重力作用等向深层土壤迁移与沉积[14]。在水分充足的条件下, DOC的垂直迁移被认为是深层土壤有机碳的主要来源。有研究表明, 在矿质土壤中DOC在土壤剖面中的通量为10~200 kg·hm-2·a-1, 在1 m深的土壤中DOC迁移和滞留量约占总土壤碳库的20%[15], 其迁移形式主要有2种, 即溶解态和复合体。例如:在富含铁/铝的火山灰土壤中有机碳主要以复合体形式迁移[16]。难降解组分(如生物质炭)主要以颗粒态或矿物结合态向深层土壤迁移, 从而增加深层土壤难降解有机碳组分的含量[17]。农业土壤表层土壤碳动态易受人为活动的干扰, 这将进一步驱动深层土壤碳库的变化[18]。例如:Hobley等[19]从12个地点采集了78个土壤样品, 分析发现土地利用方式会改变新碳(相对于土壤中的老碳而言)在土壤剖面中的分布, 并改变土壤不同深度有机碳的组分。因此, 从表层土壤和深层土壤有机碳的动态关系来看, 土壤移动碳传输是深层土壤有机碳固定的关键, 而表层土壤管理措施亦可以通过改变土壤碳的传输而影响深层土壤有机碳的保持与稳定。
有机质在深层土壤中的转化和稳定过程主要受土壤有机碳的物理保护、化学稳定和生物化学稳定性的影响。Rumpel等[20]提出表层土壤碳输入可影响深层土壤有机碳的组成, 并指出深层和表层土壤有机碳存在不同的稳定机制。目前, 有关深层土壤有机碳的稳定性主要有以下几方面的认识:1)黏土矿物通过化学键与有机碳结合形成的物理-化学保护作用[21]。通常认为深层土壤中矿物结合的有机碳属于老碳, 难以被微生物分解。研究表明氧化铁和黏土矿物是深层土壤中的重要稳定剂[22]。Lorenz等[23]在温带和热带森林深层土壤中也发现抗氧化有机质含量与非结晶态矿物存在显著相关性。然而, 外界干扰(环境变化)也可能导致它们的替换与更新[21]。2)土壤团聚体对有机碳形成物理保护作用, 从而降低微生物与有机碳的接触[24]。深层土壤有机碳的物理保护主要体现在2个方面, 一是土壤团聚作用对POC形成保护, 二是微团聚体中黏粒与有机碳的形成复合体对有机碳的保护。然而, 表层环境变化对深层土壤团聚作用影响的研究还较少。3)微生物的活性与代谢的作用。首先, 深层土壤中的低温与低氧等环境因子限制微生物的活性[25]。其次, 土壤基质对微生物的活性限制[26-27]。例如:Chen等[28]发现亚热带森林土壤底层含有大量的极易分解有机碳, 这与微生物利用底物的特性有关。Li等[29]对我国干旱地区长期施肥的农田土壤不同深度微生物的优势种群研究表明, 表层微生物种群主要受氮素水平控制, 而深层土壤的微生物种群主要受有机碳输入水平的影响, 从而进一步影响深层土壤有机碳的矿化[30]。因此, 表层土壤向深层土壤改变基质的输入水平和强度, 改变微生物对深层碳的利用强度, 从而影响有机碳的转化和稳定。
3 生物质炭施用对有机碳迁移及深层土壤碳动态的影响生物质炭施用可影响表层有机碳组分与移动性。生物质炭被视为目前农田土壤固碳重要而有效的途径[31]。在过去10多年间, 生物质炭在土壤中的稳定性及其对土壤有机碳分解的影响(激发效应)一直是土壤学研究的热点问题。生物质炭施用可能产生促进(正激发)、抑制(负激发)和无激发现象[32-34]。这些结果与土壤类型、生物质炭生产条件及是否有植物生长参与有密切关系[35]。在生物质炭存在与否条件下, 外源碳输入对土壤原有有机碳的分解会产生不同的影响。例如:Luo等[34]采用双同位素的方法标记研究生物质炭作用下的激发效应, 发现与未施生物质炭的土壤相比, 在含有生物质炭的土壤中加入标记的葡萄糖没有产生明显的激发效应, 而生物质炭的分解与加入葡萄糖的量和土壤类型有关; Jiang等[36]研究结果显示, 在田间条件下施用氮素对富含生物质炭的土壤产生负激发效应, 其原因主要是由于生物质炭存在, 氮素促进起源于DOC的碳向土壤有机质转化。这些结果表明生物质炭参与的土壤过程不仅影响土壤有机碳的分解, 同时也改变土壤碳的迁移动态, 从而可能影响表层土壤向深层输入碳的组分及强度。
生物质炭对土壤碳移动的影响主要存在3种形式:1)生物质炭影响可溶性组分与POC的迁移。由于不同的生产原料和生产条件等因素, 生物质炭所含的DOC存在较大差异[37]。生物质炭对土壤DOC影响的报道因不同试验条件而不同。例如:赵世翔等[38]通过室内培养试验发现施加生物质炭(300和400 ℃)处理的DOC平均含量比对照增加82.09%和65.61%, 并且DOC含量随生物质炭的添加量增加而增加。Major等[39]报道在表层(0~10 cm)施用生物质炭2年后, 约41%的生物质炭因地表径流而损失, 同时发现深层土壤(30 cm)中DOC与POC存在不同程度的淋失。相反, Eykelbosh等[40]采用土柱淋溶试验发现, 酒糟炭处理中的DOC淋失量比对照降低20.7%, 是由于生物质炭对小分子脂肪族碳产生强烈吸附的结果。2)生物质炭固体颗粒迁移[41]。进入环境中的生物质炭经过崩解等风化作用, 破碎形成纳米或微米级细小颗粒, 并伴随土壤扰动或水分渗漏进入土壤深层。3)生物质炭间接作用引起的有机碳迁移[42-44], 即生物质炭可能通过改变土壤原有有机碳在土壤中的结合状态, 而改变土壤有机碳的可移动性。如:生物质炭在酸性和碱性土壤中存在不同的老化程度, 酸性土壤可加速其表面脱氢反应, 从而增加生物质炭对土壤中Al3+的吸附, 进一步增加Al3+的可移动性[42]。Al3+去除可能促使与其结合的有机质失去保护作用, 而被微生物分解或向土壤深层迁移。Smebye等[43]将2种不同来源的生物质炭添加于酸性和中性土壤后发现, 从土壤矿物表面因脱附作用产生的DOC明显增加; 刘慧云等[44]在中性和石灰性土壤中加入生物质炭后也得到相似结果, 进一步通过光谱分析发现不同处理中DOC的腐殖酸组成与复杂程度也存在明显不同。这些表层组分的变化与深层土壤有机碳存在何种关联?其在土壤剖面中的迁移如何影响生物活性?深层土壤有机碳的稳定性对其如何响应?这在今后的研究中还需进一步关注。
4 结语与展望农田施用生物质炭作为应对气候变化和土壤固碳的一个新途径, 不仅改变表层土壤碳库组成, 而且影响土壤有机碳的可移动性。生物质炭自身组分及可移动碳以不同方式向剖面深层迁移, 从而可能影响深层土壤有机碳的动态与固定潜力。然而, 深层土壤有机碳对施用生物质炭的响应还缺乏足够研究。建议今后从以下几个方面开展研究:1)生物质炭施用下表层碳组分动态与深层土壤有机碳之间的依存关系; 2)可移动碳在土壤剖面中迁移过程及其机制; 3)长期生物质炭施用下深层有机碳稳定性及生物作用机制。以上研究工作将为准确评估生物质炭改良下的农田土壤的固碳效应提供依据。
