自1992年联合国环发大会签署并通过《生物多样性公约》以来, 许多国家都在保护和持续利用生物多样性方面开展了大量的科学研究。但多侧重于生物多样性编目、分类、监测、功能和保护等方面, 对生物多样性起源与及维持机制的研究相对较少。1996年有国际组织IUBS、UNESCO、SCOPE、ICSU等共同决定开展大规模生物多样性合作项目(DIVERSITAS), 明确把“生物多样性起源、维持和变化”列为5个核心组分之一(臧润国等, 1999)。实际上, 生物多样性形成与变化机制早已成为生态学家研究的热点问题之一(Abrams, 1995)。
1 假说关于生物多样性的形成与维持机制, 国内外虽有数种假说(如突变选择、新种效应、生态位多样性假设、与生态位相关的竞争假说、环境变异假说、渐次变化时间假说、干扰假说、面积假说、生产力假说、综合作用假说(蒋有绪, 1998)、资源平衡假说(Braakhekke et al., 1999)、竞争平衡理论(Huston, 1994)、中等干扰理论(Hacker et al., 1997; 1999), 但都未形成完善的理论体系。实际上, 平衡和非平衡理论都认为在中等尺度、中等频率和中等强度的干扰下, 生物多样性最大(Roberts et al., 1995; 蒋有绪, 1998)。目前, 关于生物多样性形成理论的研究多集中在物种多样性这一层次上, 对群落多样性等形成机制的研究相对较少。
有关生物多样性形成机制的假说, 国外以Jeffries提出的观点较全面。Jeffries (1997)认为生物多样性的形成主要受3类生态因子的制约: (1)主因子, 即地理和自然因子, 这是一些大尺度的全球或区域的物理影响因子。这类因子又可分为4种, 即历史和年龄(生态系统形成的时间越古老, 生物多样性就越高)、梯度(生物多样性随环境梯度, 即纬度、海拔、深度、干旱度和盐度等的变化而变化)、面积(生物多样性随面积的增加而增加)、隔离(又可称岛屿化, 生物多样性随隔离的增加而降低); (2)区域或较小尺度的生态学模板, 又可分为4种, 即生产力(全球尺度上, 生物多样性随生产力的增加而增加; 但在局地, 生产力的增加或降低通常会降低生物多样性)、无量纲格局(指与种群多度有关的食物网的一致性、物种丰富度格局等)、生境异质性与镶嵌性(生境种类越多, 物种多样性越高)、生境架构(生物多样性随自然生境架构复杂性的增加而增加); (3)相互作用的内部因子, 又可分为4种, 即演替、种间作用、干扰和散布与拓居。
我国在生物多样性方面的研究取得了一些成果(蒋有绪等, 1993; 钱迎倩等, 1994; 中国生物多样性保护行动计划编写组, 1994; 陈灵芝, 1997; 中国生物多样性国情研究报告编写组, 1998), 有些文献还论及了生物多样性的梯度变化与生物多样性的格局及机制等(蒋有绪等, 1993; 黄建辉, 1994; 贺金生等, 1997; 张宏达, 1998; 刘世荣等, 1998), 但对其形成机制的深入研究还不够。
2 影响机制国内外对生物多样性形成与维持机制的研究多集中在物种多样性与生物及非生物生态因子之间的相互关系方面。
2.1 生物因子对生物多样性的影响 2.1.1 生产力与物种多样性的关系生产力与生物多样性之间必然存在一定的规律。例如, Foster (1998)就认为施用N肥对草地物种多样性的作用主要是通过影响生产力来实现的。但这种必然的联系是有条件的(不能有人为的增加或减少物种)、可能随生态系统类型及演替阶段的不同而不同, 并且无论如何也是非线性的(蒋有绪, 1998)。生产力对生物多样性的影响可能有不同的结果。不少研究表明, 群落生产力的增加将降低物种多样性。草地在施用N肥后, 生产力增加了, 但生产力的增加有效地阻止了下层蕨类和本地种的萌发、存活与更新, 从而降低了草地群落的物种多样性(Foster et al., 1998)。Wohlgemuth (1998)也认为高生产力将会导致物种数的减少。Pollock (1998)在对湿地的研究中, 发现在低→中生产力水平及受中等洪水频率影响的样地, 物种多样性高, 而在低或高洪水频率及低生产力的样地, 物种多样性低。他们的研究也支持Michael Huston (1995)的的物种多样性动态平衡模型。但是, 在全球尺度, 生物多样性却随生产力的增加而增加(Jeffries, 1997)。
关于生物多样性对生产力的影响, 有两种截然不同的观点。一派以Hector等为代表, 另一派以Huston等为代表, 他们在最近的“SCIENCE”杂志上展开了激烈争论(Huston et al., 2000)。多数生态学家认为:植物种数量的增加将增加生态系统的净第一性生产力(Naeem et al., 1994; 1996;Tilman et al., 1996; 1999)。著名生态学家、1996年的MacArthur奖获得者David Tilman也认为竞争模型预测与实验均证实了高植物多样性必将导致高第一性生产力(Tilman, 1999), 并且生态系统的功能组成与功能多样性还是影响植物生产力、N含量和光线穿透性的主要因子(Tilman et al., 1997)。植物多样性与组成也影响生态系统的生产力和土壤N库(Hooper, 1997)。在欧洲草地, 植物多样性的减少会导致其地上部分生物量的降低; 物种数量相同时, 功能群较少的群落, 其生产力较低(Hector et al., 1999)。
2.1.2 生物量与物种多样性的关系物种丰富度与生物量之间的关系与环境梯度、竞争等有关(Guo et al., 1998)。在没有人为增加或减少物种及其多度的条件下, 生物量低时, 物种丰富度与生物量呈正相关; 生物量超过一定水平时, 物种丰富度与生物量呈负相关; 当取样区包含不同的小生境类型时, 这种关系呈‘钟型’曲线(Guo et al., 1998)。
2.1.3 种间关系对生物多样性的影响在种间作用方面, 多数研究集中在种间协作、互惠共生、物种共存、竞争和草食等对生物多样性的影响。种间协作可以改善环境和提高幼年个体的补充与更新, 从而减少死亡率和促进定居(或萌发) (Wilson et al., 1997); 并且, 物种共存对维持雨林的物种多样性具有重要作用(Okuda et al., 1997)。Hacker等(1997)认为互惠和共生可以增加那些通常在高自然干扰、胁迫或捕食者等条件下难于生存的种类, 从而增加群落的物种多样性; 并提出了促进种的概念。后来, 他们通过巧妙的设计, 实验验证了在英国一个盐沼泽群落中, 竞争、促进作用和环境因子等对生物多样性维持的影响; 并进一步解释到, 促进种就是那些能改善环境条件、以利于别的种共存的种。由此得出结论, 在中上部潮间带, 植物多样性高的原因重要取决于3个因子的共同作用:竞争优势种的缺乏, 不严酷的自然条件和促进种的存在(Hacker et al., 1999)。种间竞争还影响物种丰富度与生物量之间的关系(Guo et al., 1998)。草食哺乳类动物对植物物种多样性的影响较大(Gough et al., 1999)。Givnish (1999)认为, 在热带, 高降水量、低降水变率的水分条件很适合两类重要的植物天敌——昆虫和真菌的生存, 而昆虫和真菌可直接增加密度制约植物的死亡率, 从而增加树种多样性。Penfold (1999)研究了补偿性死亡对维持物种多样性的作用, 他们认为亚热带雨林群落中的两个最优势种的补偿性死亡可以防止其余种遭到排斥, 但这还不能足以解释绝大多数种的彼此共存。
2.1.4 土壤微生物对生物多样性的影响不少研究表明, 土壤微生物是植物多样性的重要决定因子。土壤病原体对植物群落中植物物种多样性的维持有重要影响(Mills et al., 1998)。在美国东部, 感染了真菌与内生菌共生体的草原, 其物种多样性减少, 而总的生产力却没有差异(Clay et al., 1999)。
2.2 非生物因子对生物多样性的影响 2.2.1 干扰、空间异质性等与生物多样性的关系干扰和空间异质性常被认为是植物群落中调节物种多样性的主要因子(Groombridge, 1992; Richlefs et al., 1993; Huston, 1994; Roberts et al., 1995; 蒋有绪, 1998)。由于干扰可以阻止一个或少数种在竞争中占优势, 因此, 许多理论都认为干扰在维持物种多样性方面具有重要作用(Roberts et al., 1995)。小尺度和中等频率的干扰可以增加温带和热带森林的物种多样性(Brokaw et al., 1989; Moloney et al., 1996; Busing et al., 1997)。热带森林在灾难性干扰后, 其树种多样性随时间的增加而增加(Terborgh et al., 1996; Aplet et al., 1998; Givnish, 1999)。自然或人为干扰(如伐木)对物种多样性的影响是通过改变生境的异质性、改变种间的竞争平衡、从而形成特殊的生境来实现的(Denslow, 1995)。类似尼加拉瓜的Joan飓风所引起的树倒(treefall), 实际上是减少了竞争优势, 从而维持了雨林的物种多样性(Vandermeer et al., 1996)。在自然干扰中, 树倒、火烧、洪水等因子对生物多样性的影响作用引起了许多生态学家的兴趣。无论是温带林还是热带林, 林隙及其动态在起生物多样性的形成与维持方面都具有重要作用(Denslow, 1995; Duivenvoorden, 1996; Vandermeer et al., 1996; Busing et al., 1997; Pollock et al., 1998; Hubbell et al., 1999; 臧润国等, 1999; Gough et al., 1999)。Hubbell (1999)在对1200多个林隙长达13年多的研究基础上, 提出了由树木死亡所形成的林隙干扰对热带森林物种多样性的维持起主导作用的假说(Hubbell et al., 1999)。然而, Smith等却有不同的观点, 他们基于分子水平的研究, 认为群落交错区对热带雨林生物多样性的形成具有重要意义(Smith et al., 1997; Enserink, 1997)。
洪水对植物物种多样性的影响较大(Pollock et al., 1998; Gough et al., 1999)。Pollock等的研究表明, 在阿拉斯加一湿地群落, 受中等频率和高空间变化率洪水影响的样地, 其物种多样性高; 相反, 受经常或很少或长期洪水影响、但洪水的空间变化小的样地, 物种多样性低。这同时反映了干扰在很小尺度上的空间变化就可显著改变干扰对物种多样性的影响。
景观的斑块大小及其分布对生物多样性的分布有重要影响(Harrison, 1997)。Brosofske等(1999)的研究表明:在不同尺度, 许多植物种的分布都与景观结构特征(明确的景观斑块和道路等)紧密相关; 并且, 在不同的空间分辨率下, 景观特征与植物多样性指数的关系不同, 道路在景观尺度上对植物多样性有重要影响。北美寒温带针叶林地区的植物多样性格局也取决于生态学过程及其空间配置(Qian et al., 1998)。森林景观的破碎化会减少生物多样性(Aldrich et al., 1998), Wahlberg (1996)应用模型成功地模拟预测了景观的破碎化对物种致危的影响。
遗传上相互隔离的种群是生物多样性的一类重要组成成分, 种群多样性随生境的消失而减少, 每年仅仅在热带森林就有大约16 000 000个种群灭绝(Hughes et al., 1997)。重要生境连续不断地遭到破坏是美国濒危物种数量不断增加的原因之一, 于是美国地方和联邦政府启动了“生境保护计划”来保护濒危物种, 从而保护生物多样性(Shilling, 1997; Mann et al., 1997)
另外, 林冠高度与树种多样性关系密切(Duivenvoorden, 1996)。
2.2.2 气候因子与生物多样性的关系Whittaker (王伯荪译, 1986)认为, 生物多样性似乎是从极地和高山气候向热带低地气候增加; 在温带地区, 由海洋性气候的内陆向大陆性气候增加。种群多度的长期变化取决于物种对环境波动的敏感性及由种间相互作用所引起的环境波动的幅度(Ives et al., 1999)。因此, 气温、水分因子等及其时空变化对生物多样性的影响很大(蒋有绪, 1998)。在山地雨林中, 不同类型植物的组成和多样性, 随海拔高度的不同而不同(Aiba et al., 1999; 安树青等, 1999; 王峥峰等, 1999); 在中、高降水量的地区, 树种多样性随海拔高度的升高而降低(Lieberman et al., 1996; Vazquez et al., 1998; Aplet et al., 1998)。其根本原因是气温和降水等生态因子随海拔高度的不同而不同的缘故。Wohlgemuth (1998)认为温差大小对区域物种多样性的影响最大。在大陆范围内, 温带地区(大尺度, 51 000~100 000 km2)的树种数与实际蒸散(AET)相关(Curane et al., 1987; Adams et al., 1989; O'Brien, 1993)。AET还被看作是影响净第一性生产力的生态因子的综合指标(Rohde, 1992)。热带森林的树种多样性随降水的增加而增加、随降水变率的增加而降低(Clinebell et al., 1995; Aplet et al., 1998; Givnish, 1999), 并且降水的空间变化对植物物种的分布影响很大(Kadmon et al., 1999)。但是, Bongers等(1999)在研究了西非热带森林12个树种的多度与水分因子的关系后, 认为年平均降水量并不是决定西非森林树种分布的最重要因子; 而年最小降水量对区域物种多样性的影响却很大(Wohlgemuth, 1998)。此外, Satersdal等(1998)还研究了全球气候变化对Fennoscandia地区维管束植物物种丰富度的影响。
2.2.3 土壤因子与生物多样性的关系土壤类型及其理化性质对生物多样性影响很大(Harrison, 1997; Wohlgemuth, 1998; Clark et al., 1998; Hacker et al., 1999; Gough et al., 1999), 成土母质也影响生物多样性(Aiba et al., 1999), 火山活动的产物—岩屑堆(talus)对热带雨林的多样性和结构均有影响(Webb et al., 1999)。在自然条件下, 在热带降水相当的地区, 树种多样性随土壤肥力的增加而增加(Clinebell et al., 1995; Givnish, 1999; Hutchinson et al., 1999)。但是, 人工施肥的影响却不尽相同。施用N肥对草地植物多样性的短期影响很大, 将会降低物种多样性; 地被层的增加也将显著降低物种多样性(Foster et al., 1998)。同样, Collins等(1998)的实验也表明, 施用N肥将降低北美草原的物种多样性。Hutchinson等(1999)定量研究了美国东部次生橡树林林下维管束植物的种类组成和丰富度与土壤等环境因子的关系。分析结果表明:林下物种组成与土壤水分(估测)、N矿化率、硝化率和土壤pH值等强烈相关; 在区域尺度上, 植物区系的变化与土壤水分、硝化作用、pH值和PO4-1相关; 物种丰富度与N矿化率和N硝化率呈正相关, 与乔木的胸高断面积呈负相关, 蕨类植物丰富度与N硝化率强烈正相关, 相反, 林下树种丰富度在干旱贫瘠的样方中最高, 物种丰富度与N矿化率的强相关关系显示了地下过程与地上生物多样性之间的重要联系。Sollins (1998)实验证实了土壤组成(P、Al、K、Ca、Mg等)与土壤持水力对热带雨林物种组成的影响。土壤Ca水平显著影响草本植物多样性(Harrson, 1999)。在婆罗洲, 树种多样性随土壤P和Mg水平的增加而降低(Givnish, 1999)。在热带雨林中, 树木属的丰富度与生境的不宜(hostility)和环境胁迫有关(Duivenvoorden, 1996)。
2.2.4 火与生物多样性的关系火对生物多样性影响很大。Collins等(1998)在天然草场进行的实验表明, 火烧会降低生物多样性。Richards等(1999)还探讨了怎样优化火烧来维持群落的多样性。
2.3 分子水平的研究遗传多样性是其他多样性的基础, 并对物种和群落多样性起着决定作用(臧润国等, 1999)。因此, 从遗传多样性及繁育系统和基因流的角度来探索物种形成及不同种群在群落中的地位, 是近年来生物多样性形成机制的一个重要研究方向(Huston, 1994; Peter, 1994; Frankel et al., 1995; 臧润国等, 1999)。Smith等(1997)在分子水平上研究了雨林常见种种群的基因流及形态变异, 目的在于揭示热带雨林生物多样性的形成机制。
2.4 人类活动对生物多样性的影响许多人类活动极大地改变了物种多样性, 这种变化反过来又影响生态系统的结构和功能(Chapin Ⅲ et al., 1997)。放牧或刈割可以在火烧和施用N肥的情况下维持北美草原的物种多样性(Collins et al., 1998)。伐木对生物多样性的影响或许比较复杂。择伐虽然会严重破坏热带雨林的结构, 但却可以维持雨林高的树种多样性(Cannon et al., 1998)。但是, 在Appalachians地区的落叶阔叶林, 伐木可以导致林下稀有草本数量的减少、林下地被层种群也因不适应改变了的微气候而进一步减少等等(Meier et al., 1995)。世界范围内广泛存在的人为河流堤岸, 将严重地影响陆地与水生生境的间的能量交换, 并可能导致生物多样性和生产力的下降(Sugden, 2001)。若要维持植物物种多样性, 最有效的途径是在营林时维持并培育资源与环境在时间和空间上的多样性(Halpern et al., 1995)。Gilliam等(1995)研究了森林经营活动(如皆伐)对植物生物多样性的影响。此外, 许多生态学家对局地多样性与区域多样性的关系、特别是区域和历史过程在局地多样性形成中的作用深感兴趣, 并由此引出了许多争论(McPeek, 1996; Caley et al., 1997; Caley, 1997; Francis et al., 1998; 蒋有绪, 1998; Huston, 1999)。在利用化石、花粉等材料研究群落起源方面, Davis等(1998)对铁杉硬木林起源的研究具有代表意义。
3 信息技术与数学在生物多样性研究中的应用最近, Sala等(2000)在SCIENCE杂志上撰文指出:对于陆地生态系统, 土地利用方式的改变是影响生物多样性变化的最重要因子, 其次是气候变化、N沉降、生物交换(也就是生态系统中有意或无意的物种引进)和CO2浓度的升高。生物多样性的保护也取决于对保护对象分布和丰富度的正确认识。此外, 植物分布图的准确获取对于生物多样性保护的意义重大, 不管是温带物种还是热带树种(Sugden, 2000)。然而, GIS技术在对物种多样性形成与维持、分布、保护和利用等的分析中具有独特作用; 并且在研究土地利用格局及其变化、气候要素等的时空格局方面, GIS、RS和GPS技术等占有不可替代的地位、具有重要作用。Frohn (1998)还开发了一套新的指标, 利用遥感数据来进行景观生态学研究, 以更准确、有效地监测、模拟和评估陆地生态系统, 所有这些都有利于加深对生物多样性形成与维持机制的认识。
随着计算机软硬件技术和遥感技术的进步, RS、GIS及GPS技术在生物多样性及生态学其他领域研究中的应用也逐渐增多(彭少麟等, 1999; 郭志华等, 1999)。对生物多样性的及时监测与制图, 有利于对生物多样性形成和维持机制的认识, 而RS和GIS技术是在区域尺度上对生物多样性进行监测和制图的理想工具, 并取得了很多成果(Jorgensen et al., 1996; Stoms et al., 1997; Nagendra等1999)。在此基础之上, 若结合环境数据(如土壤、地形、气温、降水、蒸散), 则可探讨环境因子对森林多样性的影响, 进而可研究森林多样性的形成机制。对森林多样性进行监测和制图所用的遥感数据主要有:数字航空影象(Holopainen et al., 1998)和卫星遥感数据, 如NOAA AVHRR, Landsat TM, SPOT, ERS等(McCormick et al., 1998)。利用遥感数据及遥感技术不仅可以对生物多样性进行监测和制图, 而且还有许多应用。Stoms等(1997)认为遥感数据有助于加深对物种丰富度及其限制因子空间分布的认识, 有助于预测其对全球变化的响应等。遥感技术还可用来检测景观格局的变化, 以及大火对景观多样性等的短期影响(Chuvieco, 1999)。
GIS技术在生物多样性研究中的应用广泛、意义显著。利用GIS技术和工具可提取区域环境变量(温度、降水、地质、面积、坡度和坡向、太阳辐射、土壤水分、N矿化率、N硝化率、pH值等等) (Wohlgemuth, 1998; Guisan et al., 1999; Hutchinson et al., 1999; Nilsen et al., 1999); 利用GIS工具可以将研究区限制在一定的范围条件内(Kollmann et al., 1999), 这样可以尽可能剔除某些因子的影响; Guisan等(1999)还利用GIS工具模拟植物物种多样性的分布; 结合物种数据库, Iverson等(1998)用GIS建模来估算区域植物生物多样性; Clark等(1998)利用GIS工具来研究土壤营养因子对热带雨林树种丰富度和分布的影响; Gonzalez-Rebeles等(1998)利用GIS方法为当前的保护区网络更好地保护生物多样性提供依据; 遥感数据和GIS技术还可用于对生境分类, 并确定此分类结果与物种分布格局的关系(Debinski et al., 1999); GIS工具还被用来确定生物多样性保护的范围及涵盖了多数生态区的区域位置, 为政府生物多样性利用与保护提供决策依据(Funk et al., 1999); 利用大比例尺彩色红外航空影像, 结合GIS和GPS技术, McCormick (1999)对Everglades地区的植物物种分布及外来植被进行制图和分析; Kadmon等(1999)利用GIS工具研究植物物种分布与降水空间变化的关系; Hutchinson等(1999)用GIS工具研究了土壤水分、N矿化率、土壤pH值等对林下维管束植物组成与丰富度的影响。Nilsen等(1999)在研究植物群落的空间分布时, 用GIS技术整合高分辨率数字化航空红外影象, 利用GPS建造DEM (数字高程模型) (水平和垂直精度为10 cm)和准确定位野外样方调查, 然后从DEM提取环境信息(坡度、坡向和太阳辐射)和野外样方的背景数据。在概率模型的基础之上, 建立了GIS数据和传统植物群落分类数据之间的联系, 生成的植被图展现了植物群落的实际分布与潜在分布。Nilsen等的工作有利于植物群落多样性形成机制的研究。由于其研究区域位于高纬地区、面积较小(5 km2)且植被稀疏, 因此要将他们的方法移植到低纬度森林区还有一定难度。
在生物多样性影响机制的分析中, 数学方法被广泛使用, 目的在于深入揭示环境因子对生物多样性的影响。如:主成分分析PCA (Duivenvoorden, 1996)、模糊排序FO (Caranza et al., 1998)、去对应分析DCA (Gilliam et al., 1995; Qian et al., 1998; Brosofske et al., 1999)、典范对应分析CCA (Hutchinson et al., 1999; Guisan et al., 1999)、典范变量分析CVA (一种多元判别分析) (Brosofske et al., 1999)、典范判别分析CDA (Duivenvoorden, 1996)、小波分析(Brosofske et al., 1999)、逐步回归(Hutchinson et al., 1999; Kollmann et al., 1999)、线形回归(Kollmann et al., 1999)、多变量线形回归分析和逐步回归分析(Wohlgemuth, 1998)、TWINSPAN分类(Brosofske et al., 1999)、多因素方差分析MANVOA (Harrsion, 1997)、协方差分析ANCOVA (Gough et al., 1999)、通用线形模型GLM (Guisan et al., 1999)等。此外, Wilson等运用单元自动演化的理论与方法来分析种间协作与竞争的关系; Kunin (1998)还利用在各种空间分辨率上物种是否存在的地图, 开发了一个与比例尺无关的方法来准确地估算物种丰富度。
总之, 一个生态系统的物种多样性水平是由包括历史、气候、土壤、种间作用以及干扰等许多因子综合作用的结果(Guisan et al., 1999)。
生物多样性的形成与维持机制犹如一头巨大的象, 我们只有从不同的时间和空间尺度、在不同的对象层次上, 全面、深入地研究各类生物和非生物因子与生物多样性之间的相互作用机理, 才能得出关于生物多样性的形成与维持机制的全面、完善的理论, 否则我们就很可能陷入盲人摸象的境地, 只见树木, 不见森林。另外, 虽然GIS、RS、GPS技术和数学方法的应用有助于我们定量地认识复杂的生态学现象和过程, 并揭示其内在的本质规律, 但是3S技术和数学方法的应用只有与传统生态学相结合, 并接受地面调查数据或其他可靠数据的检验, 才能得出正确的结论, 也才有生命力。
