图 1 现代地球的六大区域季风-干旱系统(亚洲、南美、北美、澳洲-印尼、南非和北非系统)及其与大陆演化阶段的关系示意图(根据郭正堂[1]修改) 左上图中的绿色区为季风区,黄色区为相关的干旱区 Fig. 1 Schematic of Earth's six modern regional monsoon-dry region systems(Asian, South American, North American, Australian-Indonesian, South African and North African systems)in the context of continental evolution(modified from Guo[1]). The left insert map shows Earth's six modern regional monsoon systems(green)and their concomitant arid-zones(yellow)

这表明在Pmin(对应于北半球夏季太阳辐射高)的条件下,亚洲-北非季风降水(主要为夏季风降水)相对Pmax(对应于南半球夏季太阳辐射高)显著增加;南非季风降水显著减少。

Fig. 10 Regular sapropel deposition in the Mediterranean at the Gibeliscemi section, southern Italy about 9~8 Ma ago. The deposition(photoed by Luc Lourens)clearly demonstrates the eccentricity-modulated precession cycles, indicating the dominated pattern of North African summer monsoon variations before the full-scale Northern Hemisphere ice-sheet[72]. During low eccentricity periods, the deposition in the eastern Mediterranean was characterized by light-color carbonates, essentially lacking sapropel depositions. In contrast, during high eccentricity periods, significantly increased variations on precession-scale in the fresh-water discharge from African monsoon rainfall into the eastern Mediterranean resulted in the observed sapropel deposition-carbonate rhythm on precession cycles

Fig. 12 Schematics to show a potential role of the hypothesis/ theory of the Quaternary-modern monsoon-arid-zone climate dynamics. The development of modern anatomy allows the reconstruction of Homo erectus skull or Homo erectus based merely on a few broken pieces of its skull or teeth. Analogous to the modern anatomy, the hypothesis-theory of the Quaternary-modern monsoon-arid-region climate dynamics may potentially play a comparable role in reconstructing deep-time global-regional monsoon-arid-region climate dynamics and evolutions when the climate records are largely fragmented

Abstract

The assembled European, Asian and African continents, accounting more than half(ca. 56%) of the Earth's landmass, and the corresponding Afro-Asian monsoon-dry-region system may be viewed as the early forms of super-continent and supermonsoon-arid-zone system. A comprehensive understanding of the vast Afro-Asian monsoon-dry region system is important from both theoretical and socioeconomic standpoints. Additionally, this understanding may also provide an important "analog" to probe the climate variations in the Pangean supermonsoon-arid-zone system across the low to middle latitude of the Pangean supercontinent and its change in the context of the continental breakup. Myriad empirical records and modeling results show that Afro-Asian monsoon variations broadly follow the summer insolation changes, manifesting significant precession cycles with a nearly anti-phase relation between Northern and Southern Hemisphere. Furthermore, the orbital-scale climate variations of the Afro-Asian monsoon and the accompanied large atmospheric circulation in the Asian Westerly arid-zone are approximately in-phase at the precession band. The Afro-Asian monsoon-arid Westerlies climate variations also lead the global ice volume change at the precession band. We suggest that the dominant orbital rhythm is eccentricity-modulated precession cycles in monsoon-arid-zone systems including the Pangean supermonsoon-arid-zone system. Regarding climatic dynamics, it appears that the Afro-Asian monsoon-arid-zone system has substantial similarity with the monsoon-arid-zone systems companied with the continent evolution at different stages during the Pangean supercontinent breakup. As such, it is critical to understand the Quaternary climate dynamics of the Afro-Asian monsoon-arid-zone system, which may provide key insight into the similar climate systems in deep time when the climate records are largely fragmented.
